Argeles lies exactly at the crossraods of the Vallées des Gaves and possesses a unique character. Two millions years ago, during the Quaternary period, the region played host to colossal spurs of ice wich came down from the massifs of Gavarnie, VIgnemale and Balaïtous, and which left behind them a wide valley, fertile and very sunny. It remains a real godsens for the locals, whose lives are organised along both banks of the famous stream, the Gave de Pau. Today, there is a succession of welcoming villages linked by two easy cycle routes on wich you can take a resfreshing break by the Lac des Gaves.
